Should I Keep My Tortoise Indoors or Outdoors in June?
By Riverview Reptiles, Sileby
As the UK warms up in June, many tortoise keepers ask: Is it safe to move my tortoise outside now?
Here’s our guide to keeping your tortoise happy, healthy, and safe this month.
🌞 Why Outdoors is Ideal (When Conditions Are Right)
Most Mediterranean tortoises thrive with time outside in natural sunlight. UVB from the sun supports shell growth, appetite, and mood. In June, daytime temps in the UK often allow full or part-day outdoor time — especially with a secure setup.
🌡️ Temperature Guidelines
-
Daytime: Ideal range is 20–30°C
-
Night: If temps drop below 15°C, bring them in or provide a heated hide
-
Use a thermometer to check shady and sunny areas of your enclosure
🏡 Outdoor Setup Tips
-
Provide both sunny basking spots and shaded areas
-
Use windbreaks if the area is exposed
-
Ensure fencing or cold frames are secure from predators
-
Provide water and shelter
🌧️ What About Rainy Days?
Tortoises can handle a light rain shower — but wet, cool conditions for hours can chill them. On gloomy days, keep them indoors under a heat lamp and UVB.
🌿 Bonus Tip: Foraging While Outside
June is rich in safe plants like dandelion, sow thistle, and plantain. Let your tortoise graze naturally if your garden is pesticide-free — or visit Riverview Reptiles for a printed wild weed ID chart to help you identify what's safe.
