Sphaerodactylus torrei (Torrei Dwarf Gecko)
The Sphaerodactylus torrei, commonly also known as the Torrei Dwarf Gecko, Cuban Broad-Banded Geckolet, Cuban Banded Gecko or Barbour’s Least Gecko is a truly remarkable species and an excellent choice for advanced keepers looking for something a little different. Native to the forests of Cuba, these tiny geckos are full of character despite their miniature size. Their intricate patterning, inquisitive nature and fascinating behaviours make them an exceptional display species, particularly in a well-established, naturalistic or bioactive vivarium.
As one of the world's smallest gecko species, Sphaerodactylus torrei are best appreciated as an observation animal rather than a handling pet. They thrive in densely planted enclosures with plenty of cork bark, leaf litter, moss, and natural hiding places that allow them to exhibit their natural behaviours. Ensure the enclosure is escape proof! A daytime temperature of 24–28°c, a slight nighttime temperature drop, and humidity levels of 60–80% will provide ideal conditions. Regular misting and good ventilation are essential to maintain a healthy environment.
These insectivorous geckos feed on a variety of suitably sized live foods, including springtails, fruit flies (Drosophila), pinhead crickets and bean beetles.
The Sphaerodactylus torrei is an ideal species for enthusiasts who enjoy creating beautiful planted vivariums and observing natural behaviours. Their small size, unique appearance and engaging personalities make them a rewarding addition to any collection, whether you're an experienced gecko keeper or looking to expand into keeping rare micro-geckos.
